Longtime “Saturday Night Live” star Kenan Thompson responded to the Shane Gillis controversy that has overshadowed the show since Mr. Gillis hosted the program on Oct. 10.
In the episode, Mr. Gillis came under fire because of his opening monologue in which he joked, “I haven’t been to the gym in so long. I didn’t know women just dress like whores now?”
Mr. Thompson said that if Mr. Gillis were to host again, he’s sure “[they] would have a conversation of like, ‘How do you think that went?’ … And, ‘What do you think you could have done?’ Like a little kid, you know? I would just sit him down and be like, ‘So what do you think we could change there, pal?’”

“If he were to come back,” Mr. Thompson continued, “then I think we would have to have some sort of real chat where people’s actions don’t wave-pool the rest of us.”
Mr. Thompson also defended the comedian, saying, “I know Shane, and I don’t know him to be a mean person, necessarily.”
