A grandmother in Missouri is facing jail time and steep fines for the crime of — feeding members of the public in her home.

Dave Roland, attorney for the Goldwater Institute, has taken the case and says it all started with an anonymous complaint. Someone didn’t like that Kathy Kite, of Harrisburg, Missouri, started cooking for farmers and friends and others in her community, and hosting them in her home for chats and camaraderie during the morning hours. So that ‘someone’ called the local Health Department and complained that Kite was violating food codes, Roland said.

And now she faces a legal fight.
The case is largely unprecedented, Roland said, though he believes if it goes through the courts, Kite will win.
