Sen. Jon Husted on Sunday noted President Trump’s laudatory comments about his muscular physique.

“I know the president’s been talking about me as a football player and a few other things these days,” the Ohio Republican said at the Darke County GOP hog roast in western Ohio on Sunday.

Mr. Trump praised Mr. Husted’s tenure as a standout safety and All-American defensive back at the University of Dayton, describing how he had inspected the lawmaker.

“I examined his ass, and then I looked at his shoulders. I looked at his feet. I looked at his hand. I looked at his jawline,” the president said at a campaign rally at Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, Kentucky. “I then patted him on the shoulder, and it was like a piece of steel. I’m still recovering.”

“I never did that with a man before,” Mr. Trump said.

Sen. Bernie Moreno, Ohio Republican, chimed in on the commentary.

“Unlike the president of the United States, I will not comment on his anatomy, but I will tell you that he’s a really, really good senator,” Mr. Moreno said Sunday, “and I need him there as my partner to make sure that we finish the job that all of you wanted.”

Mr. Trump said that sharing the athletic anecdote had boosted Mr. Husted’s standing in his competitive Senate race against former Sen. Sherrod Brown, a Democrat, saying Mr. Husted gained “9 or 10 points” as a result.
