Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed says in a new anti-war ad that he will put “Michigan first.”

The spot, which focuses on the Iran war, slams President Trump while borrowing his America First rhetoric.

“Trump’s war abroad costs taxpayers a billion dollars a day on a war we have no business fighting,” Mr. El-Sayed says. “Our schools crumble, our factories shutter, our gas prices skyrocket. But when they want war? Billion-dollar blank checks.”

Mr. El-Sayed proceeds to accuse his Republican opponent, former Rep. Mike Rogers, of “advocating for war after war my entire adult life.”

“I’m running to invest our tax dollars here in Michigan,” the Democrat says. “It’s time to put Michigan first.”

The ad ends by quoting the Detroit Free Press’ endorsement, which said he “views foreign policy through an America-first lens.”

Mr. El-Sayed advocates for cutting military aid to Israel. Beyond that, his platform expresses support for “Ukraine against Russian invasion.”

His opponent, Mr. Rogers, recently said in an ad: “The war with Iran needs to end, and end quickly.”

During their debate on Thursday, Mr. El-Sayed accused Mr. Rogers of pursuing “unconditional support” for Israel at the expense of the U.S.

When asked at the debate whether he considered Israel or Iran a greater threat to America, Mr. El-Sayed called it a “ridiculous hypothetical.”

The Cook Political Report rates Michigan’s Senate race a toss-up.

The election is Nov. 3.
