A man in the Dallas area found a bag containing $128,514 in cash on top of a Bank of America ATM and returned every cent.
The money was found in Lewisville, 25 miles northwest of Dallas, and was handed over on Aug. 3.
Lewisville Police Department Chief Brook Rollins told Fort Worth’s KXAS-TV on Wednesday that “based on some of the contents of the bag, the citizen believed that it belonged to a Chick-fil-A down the road. So he took it to that Chick-fil-A in hopes of returning it to the rightful owner. It did not belong to that Chick-fil-A, so the citizen, with Chick-fil-A standing there, they went ahead and called 911 to have officers come and secure the money.”

The man who found the cash told Fort Worth’s KTVT on Tuesday that he’s a barber and didn’t want his identity publicized.
An investigation found that a Brink’s technician accidentally left the bag containing the cash, along with a smaller bag containing 19 checks, on top of the ATM after working on the machine, according to KTVT.
The money was subsequently returned to Bank of America. Mr. Rollins told KXAS that “there’s a lot of good people out there that really do want to do good,” though police also noted that if the man had kept the cash and checks, he could have faced felony theft charges.
The police have expressed interest in honoring the anonymous good Samaritan, according to KTVT. The man told the station that he’s OK with being honored in a private ceremony.
