New Jersey Republican Rep. Thomas H. Kean Jr. lost his reelection race Tuesday after missing four months of work in Washington this year while seeking treatment for depression.
Democrat Rebecca Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot, flipped the seat, helping her party in its quest to retake control of the House.
Mr. Kean, 58, stopped voting in early March, saying he was dealing with an unspecified health issue. He did not disclose until his return to the House at the end of June that he was receiving inpatient treatment for depression.
