Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson conceded his party’s loss of the majority but predicted they would take back the chamber in 2028.
“To every American disappointed by tonight’s results, I mean I’m disappointed too,” the Louisiana Republican said. “But we are never discouraged.”
Mr. Johnson, speaking Tuesday night from his hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana, said Americans remain alarmed about Democrats’ embrace of socialism and promised that Republicans’ fight against that insurgent movement is not over.

“Republicans will not be deterred by the outcome of one election,” he said. “In fact, you know what we do? We double down.”
The outgoing speaker said Republicans “will continue pressing forward with our agenda of common sense and our vision to make America great again.”
“And come 2028, we will take back the House and we will finish this job,” he said.
Mr. Johnson expressed concern about some of the newly elected Democrats who want to “turn Congress into a circus.”
“If they make the next two years about retribution and lawfare and partisan games, every American will suffer by that,” he said. “We will put a firewall of House Republicans standing in their way to ensure that doesn’t happen.”
Senate Majority Leader John Thune offered similar sentiments in a statement posted to social media about Republicans losing control of the upper chamber.
“Senate Republicans will not stand idly by as the far-left, socialist wing of the Democrat Party attempts to unwind everything we’ve done,” the South Dakota Republican said. “Thankfully, we still have President Trump in the White House, and we’ll work with him to stop the worst impulses of Democrat extremism. We cannot let their fringe positions become the mainstream.”
