Democrat Helena Buonanno Foulkes won Rhode Island’s gubernatorial election on Tuesday, defeating Republican Aaron Guckian and three independent candidates to keep the governor’s mansion in Democratic hands.

Ms. Foulkes secured the Democratic nomination in September by defeating incumbent Gov. Dan McKee, also a Democrat, winning 62.5% of the primary vote to his 37.5%.

Her victory Tuesday night marked a political comeback for the former CVS executive, who lost her first bid for governor in 2022 but returned four years later to claim the state’s highest office.

Of the first five gubernatorial races to be called Tuesday night, all five went for Democrats with Pennsylvania, Maryland, Illinois and Massachusetts all remaining blue.

Ms. Foulkes campaigned on housing affordability, proposing to build 20,000 homes and apartment units financed through a tax on millionaires. She also pledged to overhaul the state’s transportation department and improve access to healthcare.
