Filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen are reuniting for the first time in nearly a decade to create a movie for Netflix.

Set in the Scottish Highlands, “Jack of Spades” is a gothic mystery that will be released in theaters next fall, the streaming company announced Monday. It marks their first collaboration since 2018’s “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.”

The Coen brothers wrote the screenplay with novelist Eleanor Catton and playwright Conor McPherson. Joel Coen is directing alone, marking his second solo directorial effort and his first time helming a project co-written by his brother.

The film is based on Frances Frederica Montresor’s 1901 novel “The Alien: A Story of Middle Age” and stars Patsy Ferran, Josh O’Connor, Damian Lewis and Lesley Manville.

Joel Coen and his wife, Frances McDormand, are among the producers. Cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel, who shot “Inside Llewyn Davis,” “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” and “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” and composer Carter Burwell are also involved in the production.

The Coen brothers appeared together last month at a career retrospective at the Lumiere Film Festival in Lyon, France, where they teased future collaborations.
