Sen. Chris Murphy was hospitalized after suffering a stroke on Saturday, his aides said in a statement.

The Connecticut Democrat, who is 53, is hospitalized at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland, where, according to his staff, “he is awake and alert.”

Mr. Murphy was scheduled to travel to New Hampshire on Sunday to campaign for Rep. Chris Pappas, the Democratic candidate for Senate who is running against Republican John Sununu.

On Saturday, Mr. Murphy “started experiencing numbness in his arm while at his son’s hockey game,” according to his staff.

He was first taken to a local hospital before transferring to Johns Hopkins.

“The doctors are encouraged by his progress. He is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery,” Murphy spokesman Josh Sorbe said.

Mr. Murphy took office in 2013 and last year rose to a leadership position in the Democratic Caucus, serving as its deputy secretary.

He is not up for reelection until 2030 but has hit the campaign trail for Democratic Senate candidates across the country ahead of the midterms. He appeared last week with Democratic Senate candidate Peggy Flanagan in Minnesota and later with Democrat Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan.

Several U.S. senators have suffered strokes in recent years, including Democrats John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico and Chris Van Hollen of Maryland. All recovered and have remained in office.
