Herndon police said the man wanted for assaulting his family members and kidnapping another person in a carjacking was captured Tuesday by authorities in the Northern Virginia city.

Officials said Cristian Alvarenga Aguilar, 25, was taken into custody at about 8 a.m. Tuesday near the corner of Alabama Drive and Elden Street in Herndon after multiple people reported seeing him back in the area.

Mr. Alvarenga fled to Prince George’s County over the weekend after his attack inside a Herndon residence turned into a carjacking and multijurisdictional police chase, authorities said.

The suspect, who police said has ties to the MS-13 Salvadoran gang, was last seen in Oxon Hill, Maryland, before his arrest.

He faces charges of assault, carjacking, robbery, abduction, reckless driving, driving without a license and preventing someone from calling 911 in connection with the violent outburst against his family members.

Police said Mr. Alvarenga showed up at a relative’s home at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday in the 1000 block of Knight Lane and immediately began trashing the place.

Officials said the suspect soon began assaulting family members and forced a victim at knifepoint into their own car, which he then stole.

Authorities from the Herndon Police and the U.S. Park Police gave chase to Mr. Alvarenga, who led them into the District and later into Maryland.

Police said the suspect ditched his vehicle in Oxon Hill. The abducted victim was not harmed.

Police documents said officers have arrested him for a variety of major crimes since 2019, including carjacking, car theft, burglary, sex offenses, petty theft and assault.

Court documents show Fairfax County prosecutors dropped assault and car theft charges against Mr. Alvarenga after he was arrested in September.

In 2022, Loudoun County prosecutors secured a misdemeanor theft conviction against Mr. Alvarenga. He was sentenced to 180 days in prison, but had 135 days of the sentence suspended.

The judiciary site said Mr Alvarenga was arrested in Fairfax County in December 2020 on extortion and car theft offenses, but the case’s outcome was not readily available to the public.
