Sony Pictures on Wednesday released the first trailer for “The Social Reckoning,” Aaron Sorkin’s long-awaited follow-up to his 2010 Oscar-winning drama “The Social Network,” with Jeremy Strong stepping into the role of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

The sequel examines the whistleblower revelations that emerged as Facebook matured into a global force, centering on former Facebook engineer Frances Haugen and Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, whose reporting exposed the company’s internal research and decision-making.

Mikey Madison plays Ms. Haugen, while Jeremy Allen White portrays Mr. Horwitz. Bill Burr also stars. The broader cast includes Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, Gbenga Akinnagbe and Anna Lambe.

Mr. Strong replaces Jesse Eisenberg, who originated the Zuckerberg role in the original film. In a November 2025 interview, Mr. Eisenberg said his decision not to return had nothing to do with the film itself, telling an interviewer: “When you play a character, you feel, at some point, you’ve grown into something else.”

As reported out of CinemaCon in April, Mr. Strong’s portrayal drew early attention, with observers noting his dead-eyed intensity and deliberate speech cadence. In the trailer, his Zuckerberg declares he is far from his “dorm room” days and makes clear that when he says a conversation is over, it is over.

Mr. Sorkin, who won the Academy Award for best adapted screenplay for “The Social Network,” returns as both writer and director — his first feature directorial effort since “Being the Ricardos” in 2021. When the trailer premiered at CinemaCon, Mr. Sorkin said Facebook’s influence “has reshaped everything” since he made the first film, adding: “There isn’t a life that Facebook’s algorithm hasn’t touched. So it’s time to say more.”

The original “Social Network” grossed $226 million worldwide, earned eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won three Oscars.

The film is described as a companion piece to “The Social Network,” based on the events that gave rise to the Wall Street Journal’s “Facebook Files” series — a 2021 investigative report that exposed internal company documents revealing Facebook’s awareness of the harm its platform was causing, particularly to teenagers.
