Two Virginia men were arrested in Arlington County by fire officials and are facing charges of dumping oil into water, specifically a storm drain.

The Arlington County Fire Department said in a release Tuesday that Fairfax man Ahmad Adawi, 33, and Alexandria man Suhib Derbas, 31, engaged in “illegal dumping of substantial quantities of gasoline and motor oil into a storm drain.”

The Arlington County Office of the Fire Marshal charged Mr. Adawi with violation of the statewide fire prevention code and charged both men with conspiracy to discharge oil into waters and knowingly and willfully discharging oil into waters, fire officials said.

Officials did not say why Mr. Adawi and Mr. Derbas dumped the oil into the storm drain. The alleged dumping took place on May 21, according to court records cited by ARLNow.

Fire officials said that “discharge of petroleum-based products into the storm drainage system constitutes a violation of Virginia environmental statutes and presents a significant risk to public health, safety and the environment.”
