OPINION:
The sudden death of Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., has left the political makeup of the Senate, along with the fate of such crucial legislative matters like the SAVE Act, in question — or has it?
South Carolina, after all, is a safe Republican state.
“It certainly was a shock, it was a tragedy of course. These days we think 71 is young,” Martha Jenkins said of Graham’s passing.
But his seat will likely stay Republican, she said.
“I think in the long term there’s not going to be a lot of difference … in the political makeup of the Senate,” Jenkins said. “South Carolina went for Trump, I think by 18 points, so it’s very, very unlikely the November election would elect anything other than a Republican.”
That doesn’t mean SAVE will pass, or there will be easy solutions to any number of other political matters Republicans have to navigate to secure midterm wins. Iran is still turbulent, gas prices are still in question and Democrats are still, for the most part, fast-forwarding toward communism.
