Wizards fans won’t see A.J. Dybantsa, this year’s top draft pick, on the court again until the NBA preseason. The Wizards decided to shut him down as a precaution for their last three NBA Summer League games, according to multiple reports on Tuesday.
Second-year players Will Riley and Tre Johnson are also expected to sit out Washington’s final three summer league matchups.
Dybantsa shined in his first action since joining the Wizards as the No. 1 pick in last month’s NBA draft. The BYU product averaged 25 points through two games at the league’s annual summer league, a 10-day developmental showcase for young players.
The 19-year-old also added seven rebounds and two assists per game in limited action.
“It was kind of just testing grounds for me,” Dybantsa told ESPN after his final summer league game. “Just trying to get used to the game speed, to the plays, to the players and my teammates and the physicality of the game.”
The Wizards, anchored by Dybantsa and All-Stars Trae Young and Anthony Davis, open preseason in October.
