The Metropolitan Police Department is looking for pit bull puppies taken from a home in Southeast Washington, as well as for the suspect accused of stealing them.
The suspect entered an unoccupied home in the 4900 block of Benning Road SE by force between 2 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday, police said, and took the eight dogs, which are about 5 weeks old.
Under District law, it’s illegal to separate puppies younger than 6 weeks old from their mother. Owner Marlon Zanders, 29, told The Washington Post that the mother of the puppies, 3-year-old Peaches, was left behind.
Mr. Zanders also told the Post that he’s cooperating with police and that he thinks he knows who took the dogs.
Anyone with information is asked to text the Metropolitan Police Department tip line at 50411 or to call (202) 727-9099. The department is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the suspect.
