The Metropolitan Police Department arrested a man Friday who is accused of robbing a pharmacy in the 1800 block of Columbia Road NW while armed.
The police alleged in a release Saturday that at around 6:22 p.m. Friday, suspect Jamari Brighthaupt, 25, of Southeast went into the pharmacy while masked and demanded prescription drugs.
The police said that after making his initial demands, Brighthaupt leapt over the pharmacy counter, pulled out a gun and made additional demands, which the police did not specify.
Brighthaupt then fled the scene but proceeded to crash his car. He then continued to flee by foot in the 1500 block of North Capitol Street NW before the cops found him, arrested him and recovered the gun and prescription drugs, police said.
The police made no mention of any injuries to Brighthaupt, and said that no other vehicles were involved in the crash and that no bystanders were hurt in the incident.
Brighthaupt is charged with armed robbery, having a gun while committing a violent crime, carrying a handgun without a license, possessing an unregistered gun, possessing unregistered ammunition, possessing a high-capacity ammo-feeding device for the gun, possessing a gun as a felon, leaving the scene of a collision after causing property damage, wearing a mask during a violent crime and resisting arrest.
He is due in court for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday, according to D.C. Superior Court records.
Police previously arrested Brighthaupt in 2019 for robbing a Dupont Circle pharmacy, according to a police release from the time. He was then charged in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia with robbery and using a gun while committing a violent crime, according to a complaint filed against him.
The case did not go to trial; according to federal court records, Brighthaupt entered a plea agreement in February 2020 before being sentenced in March 2021.
