Alec Baldwin is facing a new lawsuit from the family of “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who he shot with a prop gun and killed during production in 2021.
Gloria Allred filed a civil lawsuit in the First Judicial District of New Mexico for Santa Fe on behalf of Hutchins’ family. The suit claims that cost-cutting measures on the film’s production led to the discharge of a live bullet that killed Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza.
“We look forward to litigating this case in New Mexico against all the Defendants we allege in the complaint are responsible for causing Halyna’s death, for causing Ms. Mitchell’s injuries, and for causing the loss of consortium damages of Halyna’s family, whose relationship with Halyna was severed so tragically,” Ms. Allred wrote of the suit.
In California, Ms. Allred filed similar suits against “Rust” production staff and Mr. Baldwin, who was holding the prop gun when it discharged the bullet. The claims were dismissed.
“While we had successfully litigated this case in California against many of the same Defendants being named in our New Mexico lawsuit, there were key Defendants over whom the court ruled there was no personal jurisdiction in California,” Ms. Allred said in a statement.
Mr. Baldwin, a producer and star of the film, is currently facing manslaughter charges in New Mexico. In May, his attorneys filed to dismiss the case but were denied by the judge. Mr. Baldwin’s trial follows the conviction of the film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was found guilty of manslaughter in March and is serving an 18-month prison sentence.
