A land mine was found in a storage unit in Lakewood, Colorado, Wednesday, leading law enforcement to call for city residents to stay in their home or office.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office implemented the shelter-in-place order in a quarter-mile radius around the facility at 6:49 p.m., per a post from the agency on X.
A sheriff’s office bomb technician was sent to the scene, and the U.S. Army also responded. Army personnel determined the land mine was inactive and removed it from the storage unit, with the shelter order rescinded at 8:54 p.m.
Lakewood is 8 miles west of Denver.
“It’s unusual. I know sometimes we see grenades that have been found, and those are rendered safe, but a land mine is new to me,” JCSO spokeswoman Jenny Fulton told Denver Fox affiliate KDVR.
She said the storage unit had recently been bought at an auction and that the new owners were the first to find the explosive.
