OPINION:
As Christians and allied nations, our prayers are with the Israeli people who have endured the harrowing attacks unleashed by Hamas. It’s impossible to fathom the fear and anguish of families quietly observing Shabbat and the Jewish holidays only to find their homes invaded and their communities laid to waste.
Recent years have seen a troubling strain in American-Israeli relations as opponents of Israel cast the protection of their freedom, safety, and security through a lens of partisan polarization. The Left has labeled Israel’s quest for self-determination and protection as akin to apartheid.
For many American leaders, we are unwavering in our commitment to the strategic interests of our nations, our enduring friendship, and the blending of our innovation cultures rooted in democracy and freedom. Support for Israel is not just a matter of morality but a strategic imperative.
My childhood memories are steeped in my parents’ profound admiration for Israel and their unwavering respect for this small country’s resilience in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, whether the Six-Day War or the Yom Kippur War.
My father, Dr. A. Pierre Guillermin, co-founder, and President Emeritus of Liberty University, tirelessly built bridges within the interfaith community, knowing that we must work together to protect our freedom to worship. He took immense pride in serving on the Shiloah Center for Middle Eastern and African Affairs board at Tel Aviv University. This endeavor aimed to foster dialogue between Christians and Jews on a global scale. My mother, Louanne Guillermin, also served as a National Board Member of the Conference on Christians and Jews.
I vividly recall watching the movie Exodus with my father as he spoke with me about the struggle for Israel’s independence. We both enjoyed reading the other fictional works of Leon Uris, which were grounded in the region’s complex history. The news reports of Entebbe and the Achille Lauro hijacking remain etched in my memory.
During our first family trip to Europe, my parents prioritized a visit to Dachau, a stark reminder of the horrors of the past. Later, as a 19-year-old delegate on a bipartisan mission to Israel, I had the privilege of visiting Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center, and the Diaspora Museum. One of my most treasured memories was meeting Yigael Yadin, the former Chief of Staff of the Israeli Defense Force and renowned Israeli archaeologist who uncovered the remnants of Masada, a symbol of heroism against oppression.
At the Reagan Defense Department, I learned from Cold Warriors, who were resolute in defending Israel against Soviet-backed terrorism. I left Washington, D.C., to work for Intel Corporation, a company deeply invested in Israel’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.
I am proud to support this tiny nation that shares our mutual values in a region plagued by instability and oppression. This commitment is both a moral imperative and a strategically wise choice, as our countries are dedicated to upholding the principles of freedom and democracy.
From a strategic standpoint, Israel is a crucial ally in a volatile region. Its formidable military strength and intelligence capabilities have played a pivotal role in countering terrorism and upholding stability. Israel’s geographic location makes it an indispensable partner in addressing Middle East challenges, including nuclear proliferation and the spread of extremism. Supporting Israel advances our national security interests and fosters peace and stability.
Israel isn’t merely a military ally; it’s also a technological juggernaut. Its vibrant high-tech sector has driven innovations in diverse fields, from cybersecurity to medical research. American companies have reaped the benefits of partnerships and investments in Israel, spurring economic growth and job creation. Our economic well-being is intricately tied to our collaboration with Israel’s culture of innovation.
As Christians, we recognize the profound spiritual connection between our faith and the land of Israel. It is the very birthplace of Christianity and holds immense historical and religious significance. Supporting Israel transcends mere politics or economics; it is a reaffirmation of our spiritual heritage and a heartfelt acknowledgment of the sanctity of the holy sites that hold deep meaning for millions of Christians worldwide.
Our unwavering support for Israel involves moral principles, strategic foresight, economic benefits, and a deep spiritual connection. It is a testament to our commitment to freedom, democracy, and human rights. As Christians and dedicated American allies, we proudly stand alongside Israel in its pursuit of security, peace, and prosperity. In challenging times, we must support our friends and allies, and Israel unquestionably ranks among our most steadfast partners in a tumultuous region.
Correction: This story has been updated to reflect that Louanne Guillermin served as a National Board Member of the Conference on Christians and Jews.
