OPINION:
We are indeed living in historic times (“Supreme Court rules race-based affirmative action unconstitutional,” web, June 29).
The Supreme Court’s decision last week reverses four decades of college admissions policy based on race quotas. The remarkable 6-3 vote is reflective of the supermajority brought about by the conservative appointments made by then-President Donald Trump.
Justice Clarence Thomas, one of two African American judges on the high court, voted with the majority in overturning the decision.
In his comments, Justice Thomas acknowledged that he benefited from affirmative action, but said the Constitution is “color-blind and neither knows nor tolerates classes among citizens.”
The decision comes on the heels of the court’s June 2022 vote overturning Roe v. Wade.
Then, as in the affirmative-action decision, we saw a clear display of Mr. Trump’s presidential policies, which were in keeping with the campaign promises he made.
It make no difference what anyone thinks about Mr. Trump’s character. Personally, I think his behavior post-presidency has been repugnant.
Nonetheless, his legacy in changing the face of America more than any other president in the past 50 years is forever entrenched, and nothing can change that.
Recent polls indicate that the vast majority of Republican voters still prefer Mr. Trump, warts and all.
