Exactly a quarter of the NFL’s 32 teams have coaching vacancies at the moment. And after wild card weekend, it’s hard not to wonder if one more will be added to the list.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he was “extremely disappointed” over his team’s 23-17 loss Sunday to the San Francisco 49ers — leaving analysts and fans to speculate whether coach Mike McCarthy could be fired in the coming days. McCarthy said he wasn’t worried about his job status, while Jones declined to speculate about it after the game.
“I don’t even want to discuss anything like that at this particular time,” Jones told reporters. “That’s not on the table. The game speaks for itself.”
Nonetheless, Jones indicated the Cowboys’ loss was not a personnel issue — saying he felt like Dallas had one of the best rosters in the league.
“This is a time that when you get this combination of players together, you need to have success, because we all know how it goes in the NFL,” he said.
The Cowboys came out flat against the 49ers, trailing for the entire game. The team made a fourth-quarter push, but overall, a lack of discipline sunk Dallas’ playoffs chances as the Cowboys racked up 14 penalties — tying an NFL record. The game ended with a bizarre sequence in which time expired after the Cowboys failed to clock the ball in time on a quarterback scramble. McCarthy has faced criticism for signing off on the play.
In two seasons, McCarthy has led the Cowboys to an 18-15 record. The Cowboys made the playoffs this year at 12-5, winning the NFC East in the process.
Another factor for the Cowboys to possibly consider: Dallas has two coordinators in the mix for other head coaching jobs. Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and defensive coordinator Dan Quinn have lined up interviews for multiple teams. Could the Cowboys fire McCarthy and promote one of his underlings?
“I’m proud to be standing here today,” McCarthy said when asked about his job. “I’m proud of my football team.”
