Brian G. Kolfage, the man who orchestrated the private effort to build border wall, was indicted this week on charges of tax evasion and wire fraud.
Mr. Kolfage already faced charges stemming from his work on We Build the Wall, which sought private donations it said would be used to construct fencing along the U.S.-Mexico boundary to supplement the work the Trump administration was doing.
The new indictment in federal district court in Florida, says Mr. Kolfage siphoned money from his wall work to his personal accounts but didn’t report it to the IRS.
We will investigate and prosecute those who falsely misrepresent their income – whether by traditional evasion or failing to disclose charitable contributions diverted to their personal gain,” said acting U.S. Attorney Jason R. Coody.
Mr. Kolfage, a military veteran, made waves with his private wall-building operation, based on crowdsourced funding. It raised tens of millions of dollars and had wall constructed in New Mexico and Texas.
