PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A week in September will be designated as National Estuaries Week to recognize the importance of ecosystems where the rivers meet the sea.
Maine Sens. Susan Collins, a Republican, and Angus King, an independent, cosponsored the designation of the week of Sept. 19 to 26 as estuary week. The senators said the legislation recognizes the importance of the coastal environment and reaffirms the U.S. Senate’s goal of protecting it.
The senators said Maine’s estuaries are especially important because they “provide a healthy ecosystem for our state’s fisheries and support a vigorous tourism industry, both of which sustain thousands of jobs and generate billions of dollars in revenue for our state each year.”
The Senate passed the resolution unanimously.
