Sen. Mark Warner won reelection to the U.S. Senate in Virginia over Republican challenger Daniel Gade, per the Associated Press’ projection.
The Democrat’s win was called by the AP as soon as the polls closed in Virginia at 7 p.m., with 1% of the vote in statewide.
The quick projection by the AP represents a dramatic shift from his victory in Virginia six years ago, when Mr. Warner won election by fewer than 20,000 votes over Republican Ed Gillespie, according to the Virginia Department of Elections.
Mr. Warner received messages of congratulations from his fellow Virginia Democrats, Sen. Tim Kaine and Gov. Ralph Northam.
“Congrats to my longtime friend and my senior Senator @MarkWarner on his reelection tonight!” Mr. Kaine tweeted. “A win for Virginians and all Americans. Here’s to many more celebrations together!”
