The Wimbledon tennis championship set for later this summer will be canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a German tennis official.

Dirk Hordorff, vice present of the German Tennis Federation, told Sky Sports Germany that there is “no doubt” the tennis tournament, which takes places place in London, will be canceled later this week.

This is necessary in the current situation,” he said. “It is completely unrealistic to imagine that, with the travel restrictions that we currently have, an international tennis tournament where hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world would travel [can happen]. That is unthinkable.”

Wimbledon is tennis’ premier tournament, which takes place every year from late June to mid July. It was set to begin June 29 and end July 12.

The tournament is the latest major sporting event to be canceled due to the virus.
