If America is to get through the COVID-19 crisis in good shape, it will largely be because of the private sector. We’ve already praised those organizations that — at great risk to themselves — shut down significant portions of their operations to protect public health.
And now we are pleased to learn of more and more private enterprises devoting themselves to addressing the crisis. Several distilleries, for instance, have stopped making hooch (only temporarily, we hope) and are now producing hand sanitizer. Other industrial firms have pledged to help make ventilators, which are badly needed across the country.
The coronavirus crisis will be managed at federal, state and local levels. And American private enterprise will play a big role.
