The Jacksonville Jaguars traded former Super Bowl-winning quarterback Nick Foles to the Chicago Bears for a compensatory fourth-round pick on Wednesday, ESPN reported.
A year after he was considered the hottest quarterback on the open market, the Foles experiment in Jacksonville ended after just one season.
With the Bears, Foles could be able to compete with Mitch Trubisky for the starting quarterback job, or coach Matt Nagy could just have Foles waiting in the wings if Trubisky’s performance doesn’t improve in his upcoming fourth season. Nagy and Foles overlapped with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2012, Foles’ rookie season, and with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2016.
Chicago will be Foles’ fifth NFL team after two stints with the Eagles, plus the Rams, Chiefs and Jaguars. He’s best known for winning Super Bowl LII with Philadelphia several weeks after starter Carson Wentz tore his ACL.
Last offseason, the Eagles opted to sign Wentz to a massive long-term extension and let Foles hit free agency. Foles landed with the Jaguars on a four-year, $88 million deal, but only got to start four games for them due to a combination of a Week 1 shoulder injury and ineffectiveness later in the season.
Without Foles, the Jaguars’ de facto starting quarterback is Gardner Minshew, who started the majority of games under center in Foles’ absence last year as a rookie taken in the sixth round of the 2019 draft. However, the team could also look to acquire a new quarterback in free agency or the draft for new offensive coordinator Jay Gruden, the Redskins’ former coach.
