It’s said that Washington Nationals star pitcher Max Scherzer has incredible influence within the Major League Baseball Players Association. An infrequent user of social media, when Scherzer tweets, players listen.
Scherzer was one of the first players to react to news Monday that the commissioner of baseball was not confident there would be a season, so it was no surprise that other stars have followed his lead.
Where we last left the soap opera, the MLBPA rejected the owners’ latest offer over the weekend because it still didn’t satisfy their demand for 100% of the pro rata salaries they say was originally agreed upon in late March. MLBPA executive director Tony Clark released a statement that referenced Manfred’s authority to implement a shortened schedule himself should the owners and players fail to reach an agreement.
“It’s time to get back to work,” Clark wrote. “Tell us when and where.”
But on Monday, Manfred reneged on earlier comments that he was 100% sure there would be baseball played in 2020. That angered Scherzer and other players.
“Rob Manfred and the owners are walking back on their word…AGAIN. The fans do not deserve this. So I’ll say it one more time, tell us when and where,” Scherzer tweeted.

Late Monday and continuing into Tuesday, several high-profile players, including Mike Trout, Pete Alonso and former Nationals star Bryce Harper, decided to join Scherzer and make the phrase their rallying cry.
