MUNDS PARK, Ariz. (AP) - Mail delivery has resumed in a rural northern Arizona community after its only post office unexpectedly closed.
The hundreds of people who live year-round in Munds Park were forced to travel about 40 miles (60 kilometers) round-trip to Flagstaff to get their mail after the doors to the post office were locked late last month.
Mail delivery resumed last week after the U.S. Postal Service secured a new contractor to serve the community, said Allison Tiffany, a resident of Munds Park.
Retail service to buy stamps or mail packages isn’t available yet. Tiffany said the building that houses the post office is undergoing renovations that should be done by Aug. 1, though retail service might not start immediately.
Munds Park residents offered to pick up mail for each other in Flagstaff while the post office was closed. Members of Arizona’s congressional delegation and the postmaster in Flagstaff stepped in to help restore service in Munds Park.
