PITTSBURGH (AP) - A standoff at a Pittsburgh duplex early Monday ended with a man and a woman dead, authorities said.
Police responded to the home around 1:40 a.m. after receiving a report of a man barricaded inside the residence with a possible hostage, authorities said. Another man who had been inside the home was able to escape and alert police, who tried to negotiate with the barricaded man.
SWAT teams were called to the duplex and officers were soon able to get inside the residence, where they found a woman dead from a gunshot wound, authorities said. But the officers retreated and shot several rounds of tear gas into the house when the barricaded man refused directives to leave the residence.
Officers were able to enter the home again around 5:40 a.m. and found the man dead from a gunshot wound to the head. His name and the woman’s name have not been disclosed.
No other injuries were reported. But a family of five - two adults and three children - who live in the duplex’s other unit were evacuated during the standoff as a precaution.
Authorities have not said what may have sparked the standoff.
