Washington running back Antonio Gibson is doubtful to return in Monday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers with a toe injury.
Gibson, a third-round rookie from Memphis, got hurt in the first quarter when he came up limping following a 13-yard gain. He soon hobbled to the sideline, where he was sat on a table and was examined by trainers. The 21-year-old had his toe wrapped and slowly walked to join his teammates.
The injury is a huge blow to Washington’s offense, given the rookie’s recent string of breakout performances. Last week in Dallas, Gibson rushed for three touchdowns on 20 carries for 115 yards.
With Gibson doubtful, Washington will rely on Peyton Barber and J.D. McKissic.
Washington and Pittsburgh are tied at 0 at the end of the first.
