Mississippi lawmakers sustain veto on felony records bill

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi Legislature will not challenge the governor’s veto of a bill that would have let people get more felony convictions removed from their records.

The Legislature met Monday, and the House Judiciary B Committee recommended that the lawmakers not try to override Republican Gov. Tate Reeves’ July 8 veto.

Current state law allows a person to get one felony conviction expunged. House Bill 658 would have expanded that to three.

Reeves wrote that the bill was “well-intentioned” but “would threaten public safety.”
