PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The average price of a gallon of gasoline in Rhode Island has dropped below $2, AAA Northeast reported Monday.
With the price down 6 cents, a gallon of self-serve, regular is now selling for an average of $1.95.
That’s still 18 cents higher than the national average of $1.77, but 88 cents lower than the Rhode Island price a year ago.

The plummeting prices are expected to continue.
“AAA forecasts that the national average will continue to decrease into next month, possibly dropping as low as $1.65,” spokesman Lloyd Albert said in a statement. “We haven’t seen gas prices that cheap around the country since early in 2009.”
There was a wide range of prices in Rhode Island, from a low of $1.29 to a high of $2.23 for a gallon of regular.
