The Washington Nationals begin a four-game series Thursday at first-place Atlanta, but that is just the start of a tough stretch. The Nationals’ next four series are against teams in first place in their division.
Washington (78-60) faces Atlanta (86-54) in a battle that could decide the National League East. Then the Nationals play a trio of three-game series at Minnesota, home with the Braves and at St. Louis.
The Twins (86-53) of the American League Central host the Nationals from Tuesday through Sept. 12, then the Nationals host the Braves Sept. 13-15 before playing three games at the NL Central-leading Cardinals (78-61) Sept. 16-18.
“It’s going to be a challenge,” Nationals assistant general manager Doug Harris told The Washington Times. “These guys have been pushing every day. Like our motto says, ’Stay in the fight.’ “
Meanwhile, one Nationals farm team made the playoffs. The Double-A Harrisburg Senators play game two on Thursday at Bowie, then hosts game three on Friday.
