D.C. United clinched a berth in the MLS Cup Playoffs for the fifth time in six years while the team was idle Saturday.
Thanks to the Chicago Fire tying with Cincinnati, Orlando City losing to the Houston Dynamo and Montreal Impact falling to the LA Galaxy all on Saturday, D.C. was guaranteed a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
The top seven clubs from each conference will make the playoffs this year. United (12-10-9, 45 points) are fifth in the Eastern Conference entering Sunday.
The Black and Red will make their final playoff push with Wayne Rooney. Rooney will leave the club after this year to join Derby County in England as a player and assistant coach.
Last year, Rooney’s arrival helped turn the team around from bottom-feeder to playoff qualifier, but United lost in the knockout round.
There are three games left in the regular season, starting Sunday night when United host the Seattle Sounders.
