A Michigan auto shop altered its Halloween decorations after they received backlash for featuring a President Trump scarecrow holding President Obama’s head by a rope.
Quality Coatings owner Dave Huff made the change after the decorations went viral online, saying he didn’t expect any issues beforehand and that “no race ever went into this thing.”
“It was a Halloween decoration that I guess went too far,” the Fowlerville business owner told the Detroit Free Press, adding that he’s not racist.
Mr. Huff’s display depicted Mr. Trump as a scarecrow holding a mask of Mr. Obama attached to a rope, which some took to be a noose. Mr. Huff said it was an homage to the video game Mortal Kombat and the rope is supposed to represent Mr. Obama’s spine.
The scarecrow was also featured stepping on former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s head.
The display had been up for three weeks as part of the village’s scarecrow decorating contest, but went viral after resident Kathy DeTroyer posted it on Facebook Thursday.
“How is this ok? I am disgusted this is in my hometown. Way to display your ignorance. Democrat or Republican this is just wrong,” she wrote.
Quality Coatings has not publicly addressed the backlash, which has since led to 40 negative Facebook reviews. They have since replaced the display with a yellow tape sash that reads “PC-POLICE.”
Despite the display, Mr. Huff said he didn’t vote in 2016 and doesn’t favor any candidate.
“I don’t support anyone. I’ve never voted for anyone other than myself,” he said.
