A slim majority of Americans believe immigrants should adopt U.S. values and culture, according to a new poll.

Republicans were more likely to say new residents should adapt to U.S. customs, with 77% agreeing with the statement, compared to 32% of Democrats.

Republicans were also less likely to say that immigrants have adapted American culture, with 28% agreeing, compared to 57% of Democrats. Overall, 54% believe immigrants haven’t given up the cultures from their previous countries.

The poll also saw support for legal immigration  rise from 29% in August 2018 to 35% and 60% of respondents saying diversity makes the country stronger, which was agreed with by half of Republicans and 75% of Democrats.

The poll surveyed 1,286 adults from Sept. 20-23 with a 3.8% margin of error.
