The Maryland Terrapins are ranked seventh in the country in The Associated Press preseason men’s basketball poll.
It’s the 14th time the Terrapins have been ranked in the top 10 of a preseason poll, but just the second time since the 2001-02 season.
Maryland lost Bruno Fernando to the NBA but brought back the rest of their squad from last year, led by senior guard Anthony Cowan and star sophomore forward Jalen Smith.
Their incoming freshman class includes four-star recruit Makhi Mitchell and 7-foot-2 South Sudanese center Chol Marial.
Big Ten foe Michigan State ranks No. 1 in the preseason poll, as experts had predicted. The Spartans were followed by Kentucky, Kansas, Duke and Louisville at Nos. 2 through 5.
Defending champion Virginia opens the year ranked 11th. Virginia Commonwealth took the No. 25 spot, and Georgetown received 11 votes, a tie for 36th-most in the country.
