Pretty soon, the Redskins’ Dwayne Haskins won’t be the only Ohio State quarterback playing for a Washington football team.
Cardale Jones was assigned to the DC Defenders before the inaugural XFL Draft began Tuesday, becoming the first player in team history.
The XFL assigned one quarterback to each of its eight teams before kicking off its two-day draft.
Jones is most famous for leading the Buckeyes to the national championship in the 2014 season after the two quarterbacks ahead of him on the depth chart, Braxton Miller and J.T. Barrett, went down with injuries. Jones was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 2016, saw action in one game, and spent time as the Los Angeles Chargers’ backup quarterback and on their practice squad.
The Defenders were given the first pick in the first of five “phases” of the draft, where teams drafted offensive skill players, and they used it on former James Madison and NFL wide receiver Rashard Davis. Davis owns a Super Bowl ring from the time he spent on the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad.
Another wideout the Defenders drafted was Max McCaffrey, older brother of Panthers star running back Christian McCaffrey and son of former NFL star Ed McCaffrey.
The draft will conclude Wednesday with its final two phases: one for defensive backs and a final, “open” phase where teams can fill out their roster with players remaining in the draft pool, including specialists.
The initial quarterback assignments for the other XFL teams were Landry Jones to the Dallas Renegades, Phillip Walker to the Houston Roughnecks, Luis Perez to the LA Wildcats, Matt McGloin to the New York Guardians, Jordan Ta’amu to the St. Louis BattleHawks, Brandon Silvers to the Seattle Dragons and Aaron Murray to the Tampa Bay Vipers. Most have limited NFL experience or played in the Alliance of American Football.
