CASTINE, Maine (AP) - Maine’s commencement season has kicked off on the coast in Castine.

Navy Secretary Richard Spencer delivered the commencement address and received an honorary degree on Saturday at Maine Maritime Academy.

Afterward, some graduates took oath of office and received commissions in the Navy, while others will work as U.S. Merchant Mariners.

Sen. Susan Collins, who introduced Spencer, said the graduates “represent Maine’s seafaring heritage” by contributing to the Navy and maritime industry.

Next weekend, the University of Maine System campuses and Unity College will hold their commencement exercises.
