WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont man is going to spend 13 to 15 years in prison for the fatal shooting of a Springfield father following an argument about suspected drug dealing in the neighborhood.

The Valley News reports 34-year-old Gregory Smith was convicted last year by a jury on a charge of involuntary manslaughter in the April 18, 2015, shooting death of Wesley Wing on a residential street near Springfield High School.

In court Wednesday, Smith apologized to the Wing family and the community. He called his actions a mistake that he blamed on his drug use.

Wing’s widow, Shelia Wing, said her husband’s death destroyed their family.

Smith was initially charged with second-degree murder. He had argued he was acting in self-defense.
