CLINTON, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina state trooper has been placed on administrative duty after shooting at a man who pointed a gun at him.
The N.C. Highway Patrol says in a statement that Trooper J.F. Smith stopped to check on a car parked on the shoulder of Interstate 40 in Sampson County around 3:26 a.m. on Wednesday. According to the patrol, a man pointed a gun at Smith, who fired at him three times but only hit his car.
The patrol says 35-year-old Richard Scott Lane of Goldsboro was taken into custody and treated at the scene for minor injuries resulting from broken glass. He is charged with assault by pointing a gun and assault on a government official.
