Nearly half of voters responding to a Morning Consult/Politico poll released Wednesday say President Trump’s Twitter account will hurt his efforts to win reelection.
When asked whether “President Trump’s use of Twitter helps or hurts” his chances of being re-elected, 46% of respondents said it hurts his opportunity to be president for a second term. Twenty-two percent said it helped his chances and 17% said they did not think it would have an impact either way.
A majority of voters, 55%, also said Mr. Trump’s tweeting hurts his presidency, while 48% agreed it harms national security and 43% said the president’s Twitter obsession hurts congressional GOP allies in the 2020 elections.
What’s more, 70% of respondents said that Mr. Trump uses his Twitter “too much” and 60% consider his overall use “a bad thing.”
Mr. Trump, who has almost 70 million followers, has used his Twitter to criticize his opponents, announce broad policy changes and promote what he considers his administration’s policy successes.
Mr. Trump went on an early morning tear against the International Associations of Firefighters leadership, first accusing them of endorsing Democratic presidential candidate Joseph R. Biden against their members’ wishes and then went on a blitz and retweeted more than 60 tweets in a matter of minutes.
The poll, released May 1, surveyed 1,995 registered voters from April 28th to 29th with a margin of error of 2 percentage points.
