SHELBY, N.C. (AP) - Authorities in North Carolina have filed charges against a man and a woman after investigators determined a 15-year-old girl was kept in a basement and sexually abused for more than a month last summer.

News outlets cite Cleveland County court records which say multiple charges were filed against a 57-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman. Kings Mountain Police Chief Lisa Proctor told WCNC-TV in Charlotte that the woman was the teenager’s biological mother and that the man was the teen’s stepfather.

Court documents also say a 12-year-old girl was also locked in the basement but was not assaulted.

It’s not known if either of the suspects has an attorney who could comment.
