BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The Burlington City Council has approved a contract to overhaul City Hall Park.

The contract with developer SD Ireland would be worth just under $4.5 million, with a contingency budget of about $446,000. Mynbc5.com reports the meeting went late into the night, with many residents voicing opposition to the plan.

Resident Barb Alsop says the money should go to initiatives that make the city more livable and infrastructure projects, rather than the park.

Democratic Mayor Miro Weinberger said in a letter that not going forward with park development would leave the city with “the same park problems we have today.”

Construction is slated to start by July, and the park would be closed during the construction period with a reopening possible as soon as July 2020.
