OCONOMOWOC, Wis. (AP) - Law enforcement officers shot and wounded a man who had barricaded himself in a van with a woman on an Interstate 94 overpass in Waukesha County.
Sheriff Eric Severson says a standoff began Tuesday afternoon after his deputies joined a pursuit of a suspected stolen vehicle on Highway 67. Severson says as it approached I-94 a deputy saw someone in the van point a gun out of the window. The deputy fired. After the van stopped on the I-94 overpass the man called dispatchers and said he was holding the woman hostage.
The sheriff says that after five hours of negotiations, tactical officers sent gas into the van and the man fled with a gun pointed at the woman. Two officers fired, critically wounding him. Severson says the woman fled, struggled with officers and stabbed and wounded a police dog before she was arrested.
