MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - A bill recently passed by the Vermont Legislature would add spaces to three park-and-ride lots for car poolers and others, creating 277 new parking spots.

WCAX-TV reports that Senate Pro Tem Tim Ashe tweeted the news on Friday.

The measure would add 142 new spaces at the Williston park and ride, 44 in St. Johnsbury and 91 in Royalton. It would also fund the design of five additional park-and-ride facilities across the state that would be built in fiscal year 2021. Those sites would be in Manchester, Thetford and Williamstown and two spots in Berlin.

The $2.6 million expense is intended to reduce transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions, reduce fossil fuel use and save Vermont households money. Republican Gov. Phil Scott is expected to sign the bill barring any technical errors.
