The University of Connecticut is planning to return to the Big East Conference in basketball and other sports, multiple reports said.
UConn, as it’s commonly called, has played in the American Athletic Conference ever since the original Big East broke up in 2013. The current conference is made up of 10 schools, seven of which were basketball rivals with UConn from the original conference, including Georgetown.
UConn is reportedly leaving the American altogether because the conference does not want the Huskies as a football-only member. The Big East does not sponsor football, and UConn is likely to become independent in football.
“Sources indicated it’d be shocking if the move doesn’t happen,” Yahoo’s Pete Thamel wrote.
UConn has won four national championships in men’s basketball in 1999, 2004, 2011 and 2014, the latter coming after the Huskies had to join the American. The women’s basketball team has won 11 national championships since 1995 and also stands to face better competition in the Big East.
