Giants coach Pat Shurmur said Tuesday first-rounder Daniel Jones is “on track with the goal to be ready to play Week 1” — possibly opening the door for a quarterback competition between Jones and veteran Eli Manning.
The Giants have often said Manning will be the starting quarterback since drafting Jones with the sixth overall pick — and did so again Tuesday. But Shurmur didn’t shut down the idea of Jones competing for the job.
“You never know what’s gonna happen,” Shurmur said, via the New York Daily News. “But as I said, Eli’s getting ready to play, and so is Daniel.”
Jones told reporters he’s not focused on the starting job.
“In this offseason, I think all of our focus is on improving and being better than we were the day before,” Jones said. “That is certainly mine. … We’re all trying to put ourselves in a position to play. I think every man on the team has that mindset when they go out to practice. Whatever the plan is, I think my focus, certainly right now, is just to be better than the day before.”
“Pat Shurmur definitely left the door open for a QB competition in training camp.”@KimJonesSports has the latest from @Giants camp 👇
